GD Star RatingArrows XD,
Arrows XD is a futuristic puzzle game, designed by Saudi developers Local Aliens LLC. I discovered it whilst looking for new puzzle-like board games, and found myself unable to put it down until I’d solved most of the puzzles.
The goal in Arrows XD is to get the coloured arrow blocks into the matching coloured orbs, collecting as many stars as you can. There are 100 puzzles in total: 4 levels of 20 puzzles and 10 additional bonus puzzles. The latter are gradually unlocked as you gain more XP, and are quite different from the standard puzzles.
Of course it’s not as simple as it sounds; the arrow blocks can only move forward in the direction they’re pointing in. Movement is further restricted, with arrows pointing left/right able to move up/down and vice versa. Once moved into a blank square, arrow blocks will keep moving until they run into static blocks. Consequently, you can end up in a situation where arrow blocks are endlessly zooming across the board, forcing you to restart.
The final score is determined by how quickly you solved the puzzle and how many optional stars you collected. Puzzles vary in complexity and design. New elements are introduced as you progress – ranging from colour switchers to teleports – providing enough variety to keep you coming back for more.
Arrows XD sports highly polished visuals, ambient sound effects, and quality gameplay. Game Center integration allows you to compete on the leaderboards, as well as providing the usual plethora of achievements. Early levels have intuitive but non-intrusive hint screens to bring you up to speed.
The only IAP is an optional one-off purchase providing solutions to all the puzzles for £1.49/$1.99. Whilst I felt this was a fair price (better than the never-ending virtual currency packs in other games), it does make the game too easy. After all, once you have all the solutions readily available, there’s less incentive for you to solve the trickier puzzles yourself.
Nonetheless, the solutions are very well laid out, with fully animated explanations to show you how to achieve the desired result. If you choose not to buy the solutions, you’ll have to solve the puzzles sequentially, as there is no option to skip a puzzle.
9/10 A solid and varied futuristic puzzler that’s a joy to play. The current solutions package makes it too tempting to solve the more difficult puzzles. Otherwise, Arrows XD is a must-buy for all puzzle fans.
