I’m going to take the opportunity to bring to your attention two crowd funders. One is an iOS (and even potentially Android) game and the other is a web-browser game. Both of these projects are being funded through Kickstarter and both have an extremely high chance of being funded (update, one is already past it’s goal with 30 days to go). The best of all, both of these games will be free to play.

SolForge Digital Trading Card Game

What we have here is a project of massive undertaking and is backed by some of the architects of the card game industry. They include people who have been behind Magic: the Gathering, Ascension, and many others. Their intention is to release a directly digital card game that draws upon their numerous experiences in the field.

What I find most interesting about this game is that they’re designing a game with the understanding that it is in a digital space. To whit:

SolForge was designed to take advantage of its existence in the digital space. While many digital TCGs are simply ports of existing card games moved online, with SolForge we were able to shed many of the constraints of paper games and truly explore the potential of a digital game.

and also:

The mechanic at the core of SolForge is card transformation. Whenever you play a card, it levels up to a new, more powerful version. You might play a Dragon Egg, which turns into a Dragon Whelp, which ultimately becomes a Giant Dragon! Not only do you get to play with progressively more powerful cards, but you can watch as your creatures transform into massively powerful monsters and smash your opponents!

Tales of Fallen London: The Silver Tree

You could possibly be forgiven if you’re on this website and you’ve never heard of Fallen London. It is a browser based game, which you can easily play from your iPad. I do all the time. Fallen London is effectively a freemium browser based game, but one that has been given accolades for providing an in-depth narrative experience. The game is entirely playable as a free member, but there is exclusive content for those who donate money.

The best thing is, that this kickstarter is guaranteed as by the time I have written this they have already reached their target goals. Your contribution will mean you’re getting in on the ground floor of a guaranteed successfuly kickstarter!

It’s the 13th century, and the Mongol Empire covers half the world. Its capital is the city of Karakorum, at the heart of which stands the silver tree fountain – the envy of nations. But the incendiary relationships between the Khan, his ambitious daughter and a patriotic spy threaten to tear the city apart.

As an emissary to the Great Khan’s court, you will navigate a web of intrigue, love and betrayal. Choose your cause. Fight for what you believe. Spy. Investigate. Negotiate. Lie. Decide the fate of a city.

The Silver Tree will be designed and written by Yasmeen Khan – writer of many of Fallen London’s most beloved stories, including An Intimate of Devils and What the Thunder Said – and illustrated by Paul Arendt, our magnificent artist.

Review By: Angelus Morningstar

Completed a Masters of Jurisprudence at University of Sydney. I am an activist, dramaturge, and instigator of strange mind experiments. I’m a storyteller, and I mostly tell stories about people. These aren’t always stories you’ll find written down, they can be stories told over a coffee, told by firelight, told through art act and lifestyle. Of course, we all tell stories. We love our little fictions, lies and dreams – I just like to embellish a bit more than most. My current project of substantial size is called Eidolon. It can be found here: http://www.eidolon.me
